Monkey See, Monkey Do....

Monkey See, Monkey Do....

One day after reading a passage of the Bible, I was reminded of how our kids are always imitating us. I remember how my oldest daughter was less than two years old, walked back to my bathroom where I was getting ready, after I had just finished admonishing her. She stood right by the door and put her hands on her waist and in her baby talk, started to admonish me too. I had no idea what she was saying, but she sure let me have it. What a picture of this little one, copying me, and being the spiting image of her mom, griping at her. All of us feel happy when our kids do something wonderful and we know they learned it from us. But what about when we also see our faults in them?

“One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.” Luke 11:1

This is the Bible passage that hit me like a ton of brick…and I thought, have my kids ever asked me that before? Are they like the disciples who saw Jesus having a relationship with the Father. Have my kids seeing me have a relationship with the Father and asked me to “teach them how to pray?”

For me, the most important lesson my kids can learn, is to have a strong relationship with our Heavenly Father. When they do, they will be good citizens, make good choices, etc…. This is the foundation of their life. The question is, can they see that God is my true foundation? Some times is easier to talk about an ideal, but is the ideal the reality or only an ideal.

My daily reality is that my kids will be to certain extent, what I am today. So today I want to be and do, what I dream for them to be and do. This includes the little things in life.
